Girl Scouts History

Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon was born on October 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia.  She was affectionately know as "Daisy".  She married William Mackay Low in 1886 and together they set up homes in England and Savannah.

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912 in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia.  The movement is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls with 2.8 million girls and adult members worldwide.

Juliette Gordon Low received numerous recognition and awards for her leadership with the Girl Scouts movement as listed in the below Timeline.

Juliette Gordon Low: A Timeline of Honors

  • 1948: The United States Post Office releases a three-cent stamp commemorating Juliette Gordon Low as the founder of Girl Scouts.
  • 1954: The city of Savannah names the Juliette Gordon Low Elementary School after her. Elementary schools in Arlington, Illinois, and Anaheim, California, are also named in her honor.

  • 2012: President Barack Obama posthumously awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, to Juliette Gordon Low for her “remarkable vision,” and celebrates “her dedication to empowering girls everywhere."
